Do Problematic author lists make anyone else uncomfortable? One thing I‘ve been seeing a lot on social media lately (especially TikTok) is people posting lists of authors they find problematic and their rationale. For some reason these lists bother me and I can’t entirely pinpoint why. Even if I agree with certain points about certain authors, the entire notion of posting lists like this feels kind of gross to me. I’m sure I will end up on someone’s problematic list for feeling like this. I understand the importance of being educated about how we spend our money and who we choose to support, and there are authors I wouldn’t support. But these lists seem a lot like throwing rocks at anyone who has an opinion you don’t like and not creating actual conversation. I’m curious about anyone else’s thoughts on this. -SOURCE

You know the weird thing about these “problematic” lists, is their lack of consistency. Like, for example OSCard shows up on lists because he hates gay men. Those lists scream gay haters are bad.

On the other hand, I have shown up on a few hundred lists myself, for writing a gay main character. Those lists scream gay is bad.

The worst part of these lists, is some list the authors home address and tell people to go protest in the authors yard. I am constantly having to deal with police dragging off crazy gay haters out of my driveway, because there is one of those lists circulating which has my home address on it and calls me a ring leader of “the gaypocalypse” citing that I’m some “worker of Satan”. It cites my being the author of Gay Romance as their “proof” that I am “building a gay army of satan to wipe out Christians”. Wtf?

There is an FBI investigation into it now, because a backhoe drove over my house, then 2 months later my 8month old son was murdered with a golf club, by the same golf club welding mob that broke my spine and left me crippled and bedridden for the rest of my life. And in BOTH attacks, the people attacking were yelling about some online book review site sending them to my house to “kill or be killed, kill the gays before they kill us” (which is what the attackers were chanting during the attack).

People who think this lists have no impact on us authors beyond losing books sales are delusional and have no clue how crazy haters cane get. A backhoe drove over my house, my infant son was murdered, and I’m crippled for the rest of my life because of one of these lists.

The person who created that list should be held accountable for my son’s murder.
